A new report published on 28 October 2026 finds that the UK art market continues to hold a dominant position in Europe, accounting for over 50% of the continent’s market share. Despite this strong standing, the report highlights that the UK’s art market growth is lagging behind that of other global competitors.
London remains a major international hub for art, but the report notes that 65% of employer-registered art businesses are based outside the capital. This indicates that the art sector is widely distributed across the UK, not just concentrated in London.
The report also points out that 89% of UK art businesses reported annual sales below £1 million. This suggests that a large proportion of the sector consists of small businesses, which may face significant regulatory challenges due to limited resources.
Additionally, the UK art market supports the livelihoods of an estimated 62,800 visual artists. This underlines the sector’s importance in providing employment and sustaining creative professionals throughout the country.
While the UK maintains a leading share of the European art market, the slower pace of growth compared to other countries raises questions about its future position in the global art economy.
