Long-Lost Georgia O’Keeffe Landscape to Be Auctioned in New York

A previously unknown Georgia O’Keeffe painting, Near Abiquiu, New Mexico I, will be auctioned at Christie’s New York on 17 November, following its recent rediscovery in a Manhattan apartment.

A long-lost landscape by Georgia O’Keeffe, titled Near Abiquiu, New Mexico I, is set to be offered at auction by Christie’s in New York on 17 November 2026. The painting was recently rediscovered in the closet of a private Manhattan apartment, where it had been stored in its original gallery packing for years. The existence of the artwork came to light when the owner, described as an extremely private and accomplished woman, mentioned it to a relative shortly before her passing earlier this year. Her niece then contacted Christie’s with photos of the work, which led to expert evaluation and its inclusion in the upcoming 20th Century Evening Sale.

Near Abiquiu, New Mexico I is considered an important early work by O’Keeffe and is likely the first in a series of three paintings depicting Lobo Peak near Taos Pueblo in New Mexico. The second painting in the series is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the third is in a private collection that was formerly owned by David and Peggy Rockefeller. This series demonstrates O’Keeffe’s fascination with the New Mexico landscape, a subject she explored frequently in her modern, abstracted style.

The painting features undulating lines of earth tones and rich impasto, placing the viewer in direct communication with the landscape. O’Keeffe was captivated by New Mexico’s expansive skies, rolling hills, and distinctive light, which she contrasted with the dense urban environment of New York City. She expressed her admiration for the Lobo Mountain area in a letter to her husband, Alfred Stieglitz, describing her desire to paint the mountain repeatedly.

Christie’s will exhibit Near Abiquiu, New Mexico I as part of its Marquee Week at 20 Rockefeller Center from 7 to 17 November. The painting is expected to be a highlight of the event, which also features works from the collections of Clive Davis, Herbert Lust, Antonio Homem Sonnabend, and others. The work carries an estimated auction value of $3 million to $5 million.

The rediscovery and upcoming auction of this painting provide art enthusiasts and collectors with a rare opportunity to acquire a significant piece from O’Keeffe’s early exploration of the New Mexico landscape, offering insight into her evolving style and enduring inspiration from the region.
