Inaugural Whitehorse Art Prize Celebrates Nature-Inspired Creativity

The first Whitehorse Art Prize offers Victorian artists a new platform to showcase works inspired by the natural environment, with significant prize money and opportunities for local artists.

The Whitehorse Art Prize, launched for the first time in 2026, invites artists to submit works that reflect or respond to the natural environment. This new art competition encourages contemporary interpretations of nature through painting, works on paper, and ceramics.

Artists from across Victoria are eligible to enter the Main Prize, which carries a substantial reward of $20,000. Additionally, those who live, work, or study within the City of Whitehorse can compete for a Local Prize valued at $10,000. Ceramic artists have a dedicated category as well, with the Lyn A. Baines Ceramic Prize offering $5,000.

The competition emphasises artworks inspired by landscapes or other natural themes, encouraging a broad and modern approach to the subject. This focus aims to highlight the diverse ways artists engage with the environment in their creative practice.

Winning entries will not only receive prize money but will also be acquired into the Whitehorse Art Collection. This collection is one of the oldest and largest local government art collections in metropolitan Melbourne, providing artists with lasting recognition and exposure.

The winners of the inaugural Whitehorse Art Prize will be announced at an exhibition opening event scheduled for Friday, 16 April 2027. This event will mark the culmination of the competition and celebrate the artistic achievements of the participants.

By establishing this prize, the City of Whitehorse is fostering artistic engagement with environmental themes and supporting both local and Victorian artists. The prize offers a valuable opportunity for artists to gain recognition and contribute to a significant public art collection.

Why it matters

The Whitehorse Art Prize creates a new avenue for artists to explore and express their relationship with the natural environment, a theme of growing cultural and ecological importance. By supporting local and Victorian artists with substantial prizes and collection acquisitions, the competition strengthens the regional arts scene and promotes environmental awareness through contemporary art.
