Sydney Contemporary will present Why We Collect: Collectors In Conversation on Saturday, 5 September 2026, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the fair’s 10th Edition Collector Lounge at Carriageworks. A valid Sydney Contemporary ticket is required for entry.
Arts advocate and collector Kym Elphinstone will appear with collectors Max and Gaibrielle Germanos. The conversation will be moderated by Sebastian Goldspink, curator of the 10th Edition Collector Lounge. The session is part of a series examining the stories behind works displayed in the lounge.
The speakers will discuss what first attracts collectors to a work, how collections change over time, the relationships collectors build with artists and galleries, and the role collecting plays in supporting Australia’s contemporary art ecosystem. The event page says each talk in the series runs for about 45 minutes and is followed by 15 minutes of questions and answers.
Elphinstone founded cultural communications agency Articulate Advisory and chairs Firstdraft. Max and Gaibrielle Germanos founded the curatorial platform 3:33 Art Projects, which supports emerging and mid-career artists. Goldspink is an independent Sydney curator and the founder of ALASKA Projects.
Sydney Contemporary’s tenth edition runs at Carriageworks from 3 to 6 September 2026. The collectors’ discussion gives visitors a direct account of how private collections are formed and how collecting connects buyers, artists, galleries and institutions.
