Biennale di Venezia Opens Calls for Two New Choreographies for 2027 Dance Festival

The Biennale di Venezia has launched national and international calls for two original choreographic works to premiere at the 2027 Biennale Danza, with submissions open until 20 October 2026.

On 15 September 2026, the Biennale di Venezia opened both national and international calls for two new, original choreographies. These works are scheduled to debut at the 21st International Festival of Contemporary Dance, Biennale Danza 2027, which will take place from 15 to 31 July 2027.

The calls are available on the official Biennale website, and choreographers can submit their applications until 20 October 2026. The selection of the two new works will be overseen by Wayne McGregor, the artistic director of the Dance Sector at the Biennale.

The Biennale foundation will provide financial support for the selected projects. This support covers artistic fees, travel, accommodation, and technical requirements necessary for the production and presentation of the new choreographies. The funding can be used independently or in collaboration with other partners involved in the creation process.

This initiative continues Biennale Danza’s commitment to supporting new generations of artists and dance companies in Italy and abroad. For the sixth consecutive year, the festival is encouraging the development of original dance works through these open calls.

Previous editions of Biennale Danza have featured works such as "A Good Man is Hard to Find" by the British duo Bullyache, as well as pieces by New Zealand and Italian choreographers. These examples highlight the festival’s ongoing role in presenting diverse contemporary dance creations.

The current open calls offer choreographers worldwide the opportunity to present new works at a major international festival, fostering artistic innovation and cultural exchange within the global dance community.

Why it matters

The Biennale di Venezia’s open calls for new choreographies provide a significant platform for emerging and established choreographers to showcase original work on an international stage. By supporting the creation and presentation of new dance pieces, the festival promotes cultural diversity and innovation in contemporary dance, benefiting artists and audiences worldwide.
