Berlin’s Young Gallery Heidi Moves to London’s Dynamic Art Scene

Heidi, a gallery previously based in Berlin, has relocated to London, drawn by the city’s openness to experimental and subcultural art.

Heidi, regarded as one of Berlin’s notable young galleries, has recently made the move to London. Gallery director Pauline Seguin described the decision as influenced by both push and pull factors. While Paris was considered as a possible new location, Seguin ultimately chose London, citing its appetite for experimental and subcultural art as a decisive reason.

Seguin, who is the daughter of French furniture gallerist Patrick Seguin, noted that Paris’s tastes remain somewhat conservative, whereas London offers a more supportive environment for contemporary and innovative art practices. This environment was a key factor in the gallery’s relocation.

Heidi’s arrival comes at a time when London’s emerging gallery scene is experiencing renewed optimism. Despite concerns following Brexit, the city’s art community has shown resilience, and Heidi’s move is seen as contributing to this positive momentum.

The gallery is set to participate in the Focus section at Frieze London, presenting a solo exhibition by painter Benjamin Lallier. This marks Heidi’s first major presentation in the UK and signals its intent to establish a presence in the British art market.

Following Frieze, Heidi will host a second show featuring new video works by the artist Strafer. Seguin acknowledges that adapting to the new London space, with its various divisions, presents challenges, but she views this as an exciting opportunity to explore new possibilities for the gallery.

Heidi’s relocation underscores London’s ongoing appeal as a centre for contemporary and experimental art, reinforcing the city’s role in supporting emerging galleries and artists.

Why it matters

Heidi’s move to London highlights the city’s continued significance for contemporary and experimental art, demonstrating its ability to attract innovative galleries and foster a resilient art scene despite broader uncertainties.
